Gumbo synthesizes the roots of music heard in the American southern states in the first half of the 20th century; especially in New Orleans, where music from around the world was being fused into a 'gumbo' that evolved into jazz, blues, soul, and rock. Gumbo's original music draws from the heart and soul of that musical time and place, reflecting the excellent songwriting of that era in brand new expressions of the same spirit and energy.

Dana Reed is a Mid-Valley Keyboard- and- Song Man born and raised in Oregon. His first gig was early morning on May 5th , 1953 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. The obstetrician did not think much of his singing at the time and slapped him. Dana, undaunted however, went on to play and sing at many venues around the Valley both solo and with other artists. He currently (2008) lives in Jefferson Oregon with his wife Connie and daughter Miranda, and works for Wild Rose Studios in Corvallis as a musician and arranger.

Here are the lyrics to the song Money, written by Stan Freberg, published by Kavlin Music.

Don't want no kissin' . . don't want no huggin' . .

Don't want no gal to call me honey Don't want my name in the hall of fame . . .

Just gimme a big ol' pile of money

Gimme that almighty dollar . . want that lettuce, let me holler Gimme buckets full of duckets, wanna walk around and waller In pazuzas, el denaro, wanna be a millionairo . . Give me MONEY

Gonna get me a suit . that's made outa' loot

And whistle my blues to green

I got that monetaryitis . . wanna be like ol' king Midas

With that gold touch is what I mean

So gimme that ol' double eagle . . any sum that's strictly legal And financially substantial . . any sum I can feneegle Let me feel it, let me hold it, let me squeeze it, let me fold it .

It's that green ammunition, that's the stuff for which I'm wishin'

Fill my bankbags with deposits . . I'm a genius at addition Give me wampum, gilded geezers, let me count it at my leisure .

I'm a greenback detector, I'm a paper bill inspector I'm a savage for that cabbage man, to me it's golden nectar If it's currency you call it, put it right here in my wallet

I want carloads of cash, the kind I can stash

A pocket full of dough-de-o-dough

Stuff those banknotes in my bonnet . .

the one with a president's picture on it

Can I spend it man, that's all I want to know

So, gimme treasure I can measure . . that's my idea of pleasure I want smackers, bread and more bucks, wanna be like Daddy Warbucks Gimme sheckles, gimme pesos, let me see their solemn faceos.

Join Dana and her guests at a private reception to be held after the concert at Wild Rose Studios. See ticket information for attending the reception." With a seven-octave range, Dana Reason sings through her piano in a voice that connects deeply and intimately with her audience. She has shared the stage with musical luminaries Cecil Taylor, Dominic Duval, George Lewis, Barre Phillips, Lisle Ellis, and Alex Cline. Dana Reason is a leading figure in the new generation of pianists who are equally comfortable on both the jazz and classical concert stages. She has been featured on NPR, the CBC and Radio Canada and has performed on some of the major international concert stages throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. She has performed with many of today's jazz masters including George E. Lewis, Cecil Taylor, Joelle Leandre, Barre Philips and Joe McPhee. "Dana Reason plays the piano the way a gem-cutter approaches a precious stone. With breathless precision and a sure, meticulous touch, she taps away at raw material in which someone else might not see a work of art waiting to be born." –Derk Richardson, San Francisco Guardian Born in Toronto, Dana began lessons on the piano at the age of 3, where she immediately began to develop a passion for creating both traditional and more improvisational pieces of music. Earning an Associate Degree in Performance by the age of 15, Dana went on to study with the internationally renowned pianist Boaz Sharon and performed extensively up and down the West Coast and Canada before earning an MA in composition from Mills College. From there, Dana was invited to study under renowned composer George Lewis at UCSD while performing mainly with Pauline Oliveros and Philip Gelb as The Space Between Trio. The trio recorded four albums while Dana earned her Ph.D. Soon after, Dana met bassist Dominic Duval and drummer John Heward at Montreal’s 2004 Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival, where they first performed as the Dana Reason Trio. "Reason's trio unveils new possibilities of rhythm and tonality, burrowing deep into the process of music-making itself. Reason revels in the beauty of looking at music from skewed angles." -Mark Athitakis, East Bay Express The Dana Reason Trio brings together two generations in one of the most exciting new piano trios to come along in many years. Featuring Canadian born pianist Dana Reason in her first leader role, the trio is anchored by the veteran rhythm section of Montreal based drummer John Heward and bassist Dominic Duval. Their first Cd as a trio, Revealed, features three compositions by Reason and 3 collective improvisations and a composition by Duval. wikipedia: Dana Reason on Wikipedia

DANA REASON'S RECORDINGS

Album: Revealed

Reason's newest CD "Revealed" came out Spring 2009 on Circumvention Music. This long awaited release features New York bassist Dominic Duval and Canada's own veteran percussionist, John Heward. Recorded at the award winning Studio Piccolo, the CD promises a beautiful mix of Compositions by Reason and improvisations by the Trio.

Album: Dual Resonance

Dual Resonance finds Fjellestad, Reason, and Robinson in a variety of duets, trios, and quartets with the influential German bassist Peter Kowald. Half of the album was recorded in 2000 while Kowald was on tour in the United States; the other half was recorded on January 1, 2003, after Kowald's unexpected and sudden passing. Because of this double nature, Dual Resonance is a "living tribute" of sorts, documenting both Kowald's time in San Diego while on tour, as well as his enduring influence in improvised music in California. The sonic textures contained on the album range from densely packed acoustic environments, to heavy electronic-laden sounds. The music is informed by a wide variety of influences, including jazz and African-American improvisation, European improvisation, new music, and electronica.

Album: The Space Between with Barre Phillips

One of the more inventive collectives in improvisational music is The Space Between, comprised of Philip Gelb on shakuhachi, long time collaborator Dana Reason on piano, and legendary figure of the American avant garde art scene, composer and educator Pauline Oliveros, on her custom built just intonation accordion. On this date they are joined by veteran bassist Barre Phillips, whose is credited on over 100 albums, many for the German ECM label. These tracks were culled from a live recording of free improv before an audience at CNMAT in Berkeley, California, over two September evenings in 1998. This is a truly unusual instrumentation, yielding remarkable results. The ensemble uses timbre - rather than basic harmony and melodic ideas - as the main building block for composition and improvisation. This because they are working in different tuning systems: Pauline Oliveros' accordion is tuned to just intonation, Dana's piano is in European tuning, and the shakuhachi is a notoriously difficult instrument to play "in tune" due to its construction and playing technique.
